Decent Action…

5/6/2012.

I went out fishing with Ted this morning hoping for a little carp action. I started the morning off with yet another channel cat.

These catties took a liking to my little yellow balls!

A little later I was reaching for my right rod to reel it in to re-cast when I saw my rod tip bounce. As I lifted the rod tip up, the fish made a nice run and I was into my first carp of the morning. As I was fighting the fish, my other rod started to bounce so Ted took the rod. He ended up landing a 12″ largemouth bass. Meanwhile, after a decent battle, I landed a 16 1/2 pound carp.

A short time after getting my lines back into the water, I had another run on the same rod. The fish took off taking quite a bit of line so I knew I had another carp on. It was another respectable carp at just over 20 pounds.

Unfortunately, things got quiet after that and we had no other fish the rest of the morning. Still, decent action for early May on a notoriously tough lake. – Eric

Weekend Shad Report

Shad fishing remained hot over the weekend. Gary and Ted fished north of the Water Gap on Saturday morning and hooked into about 20 shad each, with many being roe. Gary fished this morning hooking into over 20 shad once again. The spawn will be coming soon and the shad fishing will begin to slow, then picking back up in mid to late May. – Eric

Surprise Trip

5/4/2012. I planned on going to work today, but my wife made an appointment to get new tires on our vehicle at 10:00am. I woke up and the weather looked perfect for a morning of fishing, so I decided to take a vacation day. I had just enough time to pack my gear up and hit the lake for about 2 hours of fishing before the tire appointment. Not much time, but enough to give it a shot.

The first fish came within the first 1/2 hour. Yet another cattie. Fortunately it was a decent one.

Shortly after that, I had another quick tap, short run, then tap again. Another cattie for sure, but it was off by the time I got to my rod. Then, finally what I’ve been waiting for. I saw a carp surface straight out in front of me. I had a perfect view of the gold scales from the side of the fish. A little later, another couple jumped out in front of me. The only problem is, I only had about a 1/2 before I’d have to leave. Then out of nowhere, my middle rod started screaming. I knew it was a carp by the way it took off. After a good battle and getting it freed from heavy weeds, I landed my first carp since January 1st! Whew, that took way too long!

It weighed in around 18 pounds. A nice, healthy, PA carp. Unfortunately, I had to start packing up to leave shortly after that, but it made the ‘surprise’ morning of fishing worth while. As the English carp fishermen would say, it was great to catch a ‘proper carp’ again! – Eric

May 2nd to 4th, 2012 Delaware River Shad Report

Gary, Ted, and the guys have been fishing the Delaware River north of the Delaware Water Gap for American Shad the last few mornings and have been doing pretty well. Most everyone hooked into or landed double-digit numbers each day. – Eric

Quick Trip

5/2/2012. I had the chance to fish for about 1 1/2 hours on Wednesday evening. I was hoping for a nice carp, but instead hooked into a few nice channel catties. The first one put up a respectable fight for a catfish.

I had another on briefly after that, then landed another in the 4-5 pound range.

Trout Fishing

I haven’t been able to get out fishing much the last few weeks, but I had a chance to spend an hour or two at the local trout stream with my daughter to at least catch something that swims. We managed to catch a few trout each time out. We caught a few brown and brook trout. Here are a few pics:

These little guys are fun to catch with a fly rod, but I’m really ready for some shad or carp fishing when I get some time! – Eric

4/28/2012 Delaware River Shad Fishing Report

It’s been a tyical year for American Shad fishing. The river is either too cold, too warm, too high, too low, too clear, or too muddy! Conditions in April on the Delaware River are rarely perfect. April brings a wide variety of weather to the Northeast area and this year is no different. The water went from super low, clear and very warm (65 degrees) to dirty and very cold (46 degrees) in a matter of a few days. Shad fishing has been tough, but there are still fish being caught all throughout the river. There have been decent catches reported, but most of the fishing has been spotty. Gary and the guys fished north of the Water Gap and landed a few, but not big numbers. River conditions should be ideal this week and I expect very good catch reports during the week. – Eric

4/13/2012 Delaware River Shad Report

Gary, Kyle, and Doug fished around the Lehighton Hole north of the Delaware Water Gap on Friday morning. Gary went 7 for 11, while Kyle and Doug each only went 1 for 2. Fishing should heat up over the next few days as the warmer temps raise the water temperature. – Eric

4/7/2012 Report. Fished north of the Water Gap with the fish consultant for a few hours late afternoon, early evening. I went 1 for 4. The fish consultant was almost skunked but saved the day by landing a walleye and shad in the last 10 minutes before leaving. Met 3 fishermen in a canoe that tipped over and went into the water. Fortunately, they were all wearing PFDs and were just cold and wet. They borrowed my phone to call someone to pick them up at Smithfield Beach. Be safe out there. – Eric

3/28/2012 Shad Report…

‘The Guys’ fished above the Delaware Water Gap on Saturday and had some shad action. The action wasn’t hot, but there were some shad to be had with everyone fishing hooking into at least a few fish during a few hours in the morning.

On Tuesday, late afternoon, Gary and Doug fished for a few hours at the ‘Lehighton Hole’. Word was that no shad were being caught earlier in the day following the cold front that pushed through. River temperatures dropped about 10 degrees overnight. But, by late afternoon river temperatures rose back to about 52 degrees. Gary and Doug each landed a few shad in the late afternoon. Gary also laneded a nice 18 inch brook trout. – Eric
